Bali Beyond the Beach Club: A Week in Sidemen Valley

Skip Canggu. The most interesting week in Bali right now is in the rice terraces east of Ubud, where old rituals and slow travel are quietly winning.

Bali Beyond the Beach Club: A Week in Sidemen Valley

Bali Beyond the Beach Club

Canggu has become a suburb of Sydney with better coffee. If you want the Bali that made people fall in love with Bali, drive east.

Sidemen, not Seminyak

Sidemen Valley is what Ubud looked like in the 1990s: terraced rice, no traffic lights, temple bells at 5am. Guesthouses like Samanvaya and Wapa di Ume Sidemen run under $150 a night.

What to actually do

1. Walk the ridge from Tabola to Telaga Waja at sunrise. 2. Learn tenun ikat weaving from a Pengsong family — bookable through the village co-op. 3. Cook with a Balinese Hindu family for Galungan. This is not a "class." It's a meal. 4. Climb Mount Agung with a licensed guide. Two nights, one summit, zero regrets.

The uncomfortable part

Bali is over-touristed. Sidemen is not — yet. Travel small, tip well, don't geotag the temple.
