The Chiang Mai Neighborhood Turning Its Alley Into a Garden
On a lane behind Wat Ket, a dozen households have turned a canal-side alley into one of the city's most photographed community gardens.
The Alley That Grew
You would not find it on a map. That is the point.
How it started
In 2022, three neighbors on Soi 2 behind Wat Ket cleaned up a stretch of canal-side alley that had become a scooter dumping ground. They planted lemongrass. Then galangal. Then a mango tree.
How it grew
By late 2024, eleven households were tending a 90-meter linear garden with hand-painted planters, a compost station, and a lending shelf for herbs. The city, unusually, left them alone.
Why it matters
Chiang Mai's old city has lost more than 60% of its permeable ground cover in a decade. Micro-gardens like this one lower ambient temperatures by 2–3°C on the block. That is not decorative. That is climate adaptation at the smallest scale that works.
Go see it. Buy a bag of lemongrass. Don't geotag the entrance.
