Digital Nomads Aren't Saving Bali. They're Not Killing It Either.
The nomad discourse is louder than the nomad footprint. The real pressure on Bali is domestic.
A Sense of Proportion
Every six months, a viral post declares that digital nomads are destroying Bali. Every six months, a rebuttal insists they are saving it. Both are wrong in about the same proportion.
The numbers
Bali receives roughly 6 million international arrivals a year. Long-stay remote workers on the newer B211A / Second Home / E33G visas number in the low tens of thousands. That is under 1% of foreign arrivals, and a fraction of a percent of the island's population.
Where the real pressure is
Domestic tourism from Jakarta and Surabaya. Villa developers, most of them Indonesian-owned. A groundwater table that would be under stress if nomads never existed.
The uncomfortable middle
Nomads do displace long-term renters in Canggu. They also spend more per head than the average package tourist. Both things are true. Neither is the main story.
Stop yelling at nomads. Start regulating villa construction.
