Malaysia's Anwar Coalition Is Surviving on Arithmetic, Not Consensus
The unity government has held longer than critics predicted. Its structural problems are exactly the ones critics identified.
The Coalition That Shouldn't Work
Pakatan Harapan governing with UMNO would have been unthinkable in 2018. It is the arithmetic of the 2022 election. It is holding — barely.
Where the numbers help
- A working Dewan Rakyat majority, buttressed by GPS and GRS. - A finance ministry running credible fiscal consolidation. - Ringgit stabilization after a rough 2023.
Where the numbers don't
Every hard vote — the Sedition Act reform, the DNAA on Najib, the halal certification bill — has exposed the coalition's real center of gravity. It is not reform.
The 2027 problem
The next general election will not deliver another accidental majority. Anwar's team knows this. UMNO's team knows this too, and is positioning accordingly. What comes after arithmetic is politics, and Malaysian politics has always been rougher than the arithmetic suggests.
