Thailand's EV Push Is Real, But the Grid Isn't Ready
BYD, MG, and Great Wall are assembling in Rayong. The chargers are catching up. The distribution transformers are not.
Rayong''s New Second Act
Thailand''s automotive cluster, built on Japanese ICE dominance, is being rewired around Chinese EVs.
What''s built
- 3 major Chinese OEM assembly plants operational. - EV registrations up 300%+ year-on-year in 2024. - A charger rollout that finally makes Bangkok–Phuket viable on battery.
What''s not
Provincial distribution transformers. Rural feeder lines. A tariff structure that reflects nighttime demand shifting. MEA and PEA are working on it. They are not there.
The industrial question
Japanese incumbents — Toyota especially — are choosing hybrids over BEVs regionally. That bet may be right for Thailand''s current grid. It is a shrinking window as Chinese pricing pressure compounds.
The next three years decide whether Thailand becomes ASEAN''s EV factory or its EV consumer. It cannot easily be both.
