The Furnace and the Throne
Since 2016, Vietnam's anti-corruption drive — the "blazing furnace" — has removed thousands of party officials. Since 2023, it has removed two sitting presidents. That is not a coincidence.
The dual function
Cleaner government, yes. Also: a controlled purge of factional rivals ahead of the 14th Party Congress in 2026. Both are real. Only one is advertised.
Who's rising
General Secretary To Lam consolidated public security, security services, and now the party's discipline apparatus. His network — many with Ministry of Public Security backgrounds — now sits across the Politburo.
What it means for policy
Continuity on economic opening. Tightening on civil society. A foreign policy that continues to hedge but with a firmer internal hand behind it.
The furnace burns real corruption. It also burns rivals. In Hanoi, those are not separate categories.
